Since the present government is following a strict policy to ensure safe migration, the number of Bangladeshi workers going abroad with employment is likely to reach some 11 lakh by the end of this year. A report published in national news agency BSS recently.
“The overseas job markets are witnessing a boom and 9,90,728 Bangladeshi workers have already gone abroad till December 21 this year,” Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam said to BSS.
He said the government expects a substantial growth in manpower export in the coming year because of various realistic initiatives taken by the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“We are very careful about human trafficking… we are providing foreign language training to our overseas job seekers across the country,” Islam added.
He said the government has undertaken a special programme for rehabilitation of the expatriate workers who have returned home. Besides, several developed countries expressed their interest in taking skilled and semi-skilled workers from Bangladesh.
The government is helping to develop skilled workers in 48 different trades and also has 70 technical training centres (TTC) for such development. It is also constructing 40 training centres at upazila level with 50 more in the pipeline, officials said.
In 2016, a total of 7,57,731 Bangladeshi workers went abroad with job, while the number was 5,55,881 in 2015. Currently about 1.3 crore Bangladeshis are employed in 162 countries and they remit annually over US$ 15 billion to the country.
Regarding awareness among the overseas workers, the minister said social awareness is essential to ensure safe immigration because many workers are going abroad without receiving proper knowledge.
He said the main objective of the government of sending workers abroad is to continue the present trend of overseas employment as well as attaining the government’s target of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The government has a plan to explore new labour markets as well as open new labour wings, where a significant number of Bangladeshi workers are employed, for ensuring their welfare. At present, 29 labour wings are working aboard.
Besides, Japan showed a keen interest in recruiting skilled workers from Bangladesh and a MoU will be signed between Bangladesh and Japan within a few days.
